Ambergris Caye: The island is immediately south of the Yucatan Peninsula, is approximately 26 miles long, runs from north to south and is very narrow. The narrowest section is about 400 ft and the widest section is about .5 miles across.
San Pedro Town: Population approximately 12,000, is located on the southern portion of the island. The town core is about 1 mile long and located on one of the narrowest sections of the island. From the town core heading south, you can travel for about 4 miles to the southern tip of the island. From the town core to the Sand Pedro River "cut", which is heading north, is about 3/4 mile. The river cut is a man made waterway which bisects the island from east to west. The cut is approximately 50 ft wide. This allows a form of short-cut travel between the windward and leeward sides of the island. The river also is a natural barrier which has curtailed town growth. The town is very quickly growing westward and southward due to easy accessibility of utilities such as water, sewer, cable T.V., telephones and electricity. |
